Don’t let the things that happen to you get you down.

This is a quote that our beneficiary, 48-year-old Bibi Suzana, holds tightly to. A wife with two children and one grandchild, Bibi was a storekeeper at Tesco until she was met with a sudden stroke. Not only did she lose the ability to walk, but she also lost her source of income as she had to be on medical leave for months. As the breadwinner of the family, this affected everyone at home. Her stay-at-home husband looks after their son who is a slow learner, along with their daughter’s child as she had just started working.

Great Heart Charity Association decided to step in by providing finances over three months along with buying groceries for the family. With our social worker’s support, along with the help of her family members, Bibi has began to recover and can walk now. Bibi’s husband now sells pisang goreng and earns about RM60-80 daily.

Bibi’s strength and motivation to recover is an inspiration to us all to never give up. Syahirah, Great Heart’s social worker, was reminded by Bibi’s story to be strong and face challenges in life head on!

“Although I was sick, I didn’t want to sit down doing nothing… I was trying to help my wife…” he explained to GHCA assessment team on why he wanted to sell banana fritters and rojak.

Hussen bin Abdullah is a 59-year-old kidney patient who suffered from diabetes 18 years ago. He has been living in a small and stuffy room with his wife, Mukaromah, who has always been by his side throughout their life. She worked as a house cleaner with monthly income of RM800 in order to cover their household expenses.

Due to Hussen’s kidney failure, he has to undergo dialysis treatment that costs RM1,950 monthly. His wife was unable to pay for such a huge amount of dialysis fee. Hussen on the other hand used to work at the construction site before becoming a cleaner, but is now forced to stop working due to his worsening health condition.

But he didn’t stop there. To overcome their financial challenge, the couple has been recently selling banana fritters, rojak and other traditional cakes at their housing area everyday to earn some living income.

Inspired by his self determination to push forward for a living, Great Heart Charity has decided to subsidize his haemodialysis treatment fee for 7 months from July 2019 to January 2020 with a total amount of RM1,500 monthly, via collaboration with CARI Internet’s online crowdfunding that has recently succeeded in reaching its total fundraising target.

“Today’s visitation has truly shown me the meaning of how to be more grateful with my life, just as the beneficiaries are always grateful with theirs.” said Salina, one of the 4 volunteers who made an early Deepavali grocery distributions to our beneficiaries on 12 October to prepare for Deepavali celebration in 2 weeks’ time.

On the grocery distribution day, GHCA’s social workers were divided into 2 teams to follow up for the visitation to homes of the 10 beneficiaries in Klang and Kuala Lumpur.

It was truly a meaningful day for both GHCA’s volunteers and the beneficiaries as the visitations have lifted smiles on everyone’s face!

Meet Mr Perakash, a 45-years-old factory worker who lives alone at his sparsely furnished room in a small apartment. His life changed tremendously when he was diagnosed with heart illness. From being a proud husband and father, he’s now fighting for his own life all by himself.

However, this doesn’t stop him from believing that everything will be fine someday. He took a hard decision to let go of his wife and children, as he doesn’t want to burden them with his situation.

Despite the pain, Mr Perakash still comes out smiling and continues working to provide money for his children. Happy tears flow whenever he gets to see his children, whom have become his pillar of strength. Having strong motivation to cure his illness, he asked for help to go for angioplasty treatment.

Seeing how inspiring his will to be healthy, Great Heart Charity decided to offer financial aid for his angioplasty treatment. After the operation, he now managed to work normally.

Although no one knows what he might go through next, we hope everyone will be able to learn from Mr Perakash to maintain a positive mindset even at times of adversity!

As the saying goes, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”. It was a great honour to have the volunteers participating in this meaningful event to make a difference in the children’s Chinese New Year celebration, showering them with care and love.

The children came from five childrens’ Homes that included St. Barnabas Home, Rumah K.I.D.S, Rumah SVP Klang, Padmasambhava Children Loving Association Klang Selangor and Rumah Ozanam Klang. Among the six old folks Home were Chik Sin Thong, Rumah Orang-orang Tua Seri Setia, Rumah Orang Tua C.K.S, Persatuan Kebajikan Rumah Grace Klang, Persatuan Kebajikan Rumah Victory Malaysia and Tiam Yam Toh Teng.

Some of the homes could not thank more for the invitation as they enjoyed the delicious meal specially prepared for them. They only had good words for the caring team of TST & AT, “We want to thank these kind people who not only make good food but do good to help the needy.”

He wants to thank his regular customers and all the diners who came to show their support. The fun day of charity and good food which kept the TST &A T team busy from 10am to 9pm raised RM8,000.00 for charity.

The funds will be donated to Great Heart Charity, a non-profit organisation that provides assistance to the underprivileged community. The association which set up a counter at the restaurant to sell their charitable merchandise got a lot of support from the customers who gave donations besides buying the merchandise.

Lalitha, 39 years old, she worked as a supermarket staff 3 months ago. Unfortunately, she had hurt her finger during work and lead to unemployment. However, she never gives up and she spent all her savings to open a “nasi lemak” business stall nearby her house. She aimed to earn more money to pay her house debt, her children school fees and their foods.

She comes from a pitiful family background as well, her husband had been diagnosed with cancer 10 years ago and passed away. When she was unemployed few years ago, she owed a lot of people money for her to feed her children. Currently, her nasi lemak business is terrible and her monthly profit is not more than Rm1000. However, she showed her responsibility as a mother and she always put her daughter as priority to take care of her education and her foods.

Support: Great Heart Charity will be helping Lalitha on her rental fee for Rm300 subsidies monthly in order to help her reduce her heaviest expense. We need your help to sponsor us this family so that she and her daughter can lead a better lives.
