Gifts Galore as Underprivileged Kids Goes CNY Shopping with a Twist
PETALING JAYA, 10 February 2018: Exactly 6 days before Chinese New Year, 56 passionate volunteers from Great Heart Charity Association (GHCA) brought cheers and happiness to 50 underprivileged children from 3 different children homes namely Persatuan Kebajikan dan Sosial Kim Loo Ting, Persatuan Penganut San Bao Gong Kl & Sel and House of Joy. They were brought to the MyTown Shopping Centre for a round of treasure hunting and exciting fun and games while doing their Chinese New Year shopping. The event is sponsored by Amanah Butler Malaysia and is organised as part of GHCA’s You & Me Educational Programme, with students from Sunway
University stepping up to organise the whole charity event under the guidance of GHCA.
The children were invited to a sumptuous lunch together with the volunteers before the activity gets started. Throughout the event, each volunteer was being paired with one of the children and acted as their guardian and friend of the day, taking care of children’s needs and assisting them during each games session. The children were given 6 missions to complete at various shops and venues that aims to provide the children with a joyful, fun-filled, and unique festive experience.
At the Clothing and Apparel check point, the children get to choose any clothing that they like within the allocated budget and pose in a “Best Fashion Model” look. The children could not contain the excitement written on their face, with some seen asking the volunteers for opinions after changing into their desired apparels and coming up with many creative poses! At the Bookstore and Stationaries check point, the children were given the freedom to buy any books and stationaries that they fancy. Some were seen grabbing academic revision books and stationaries, while others grabbed their favourite story books and comics. MPH Bookstore also chip in to provide each child with a lovely stationary set!
At the Arts and Crafts check point located at the Craftomon outlet, the children were tasked with producing a piece of CNY bubble clay art within 45 minutes, where they had a great time creating their respective masterpieces with the volunteers’ assistance, after having learnt the technique for the very first time. At the Gifts and Souvenirs check point, the children had to hunt for their favourite
gift, while at the Photo Station check point, they had to pose for their “Most Creative Photo” with the Chinese New Year decorations as the backdrop. Each children was given an ang pau packet after completing this check point. Last but not least, at the Fun and Games check point, the children were treated to some mini games, bingo, and scavenger hunt, with a party pack given to the children after they have completed the games.
After an exciting day of games and shopping for their favourite Chinese New Year gifts, the children had a big smile painted across their face. Although they were a little exhausted, all of them were very happy and enjoyed their experience a lot, making new friends with the group of volunteers and thanking them for the wonderful time. As the saying goes, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”. It was a great honour to have the volunteers participating in this meaningful event to make a difference in the children’s Chinese New Year celebration, showering them with care and love.
