Update March 2016:
Great Heart Charity Association volunteers who made a surprise visit to Ramesh’s house recently were alarmed to find no one at home. They immediately contacted his wife who told them she had pushed Ramesh around the neighbourhood in his wheelchair scouring for a house to rent. The landlord has already informed Ramesh he will take back the house when the rental agreement ends in March 2016,
Finding a place to stay is only one of his many worries. His foot cast will be removed in two months’ time. Then it is time to stop depending on others to help him. He wants to be strong and work hard to earn enough to support his own family.
Never giving up, and staying strong. It is this positive thinking that has seen Ramesh through these few tough months, this positive attitude that will help him to prepare for the future.
Update February 2016:
Ramesh’s wife had a wish for the New Year: for her baby to sleep soundly in a cradle and more clothes for her children.
Great Heart volunteers granted her wish when they brought clothes and other items including a baby spring cot given by kind donors for Ramesh and his family. When his wife saw the baby cot, she immediately assembled it. The contented smile on her face as she looked at her sleeping baby was a touching scene.
It was a day of good news and happenings for Ramesh’s family as his foot is also getting much better.
Update January 2016:
On a recent visit to Ramesh in January 2016, Great Heart volunteer Iris was updated on his progress. In a month’s time they will remove the leg brace, after which he will go for a procedure to have his leg cemented. However, it will take some time before he can walk properly.
Meanwhile, as he is not able to work, they are surviving on a small income of RM300 a month which his wife gets from cleaning jobs recommended by his friends. When the money is not enough, they just go without food for the day.
Ramesh thanked Great Heart for their help and support by providing him with daily essentials and necessities under the association’s monthly support program.
Update November 2015:
RAMESH underwent surgery on 12th November 2015, at University Hospital. After discharge, he is still required to go for follow up visits every week. The doctor said it will take several months to fully recover and compliance with the follow up visits is Important.
As Ramesh is currently unable to work, Great Heart volunteers will provide his family with daily necessities to ease their burden. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Update October 2015:
Great Heart volunteers visited Ramesh recently to provide him with the monthly support subsidy and was updated on his current development.
They were informed that Ramesh’s surgery has been postponed to November 12. Ramesh is uncomfortable with his situation where he is dependent on others for assistance, but given his present condition he feels he has no choice but to accept his situation.
Ramesh is very grateful for Great Heart’s assistance and the volunteer’s concern. The volunteer was very touched when he expressed his wish for her to have a good life too.
Update September2015:
Ramesh was injured in a hit and run accident recently, leaving a scar on his head. Great Heart volunteers who visited him recently were concerned but he assured them that a passerby had sent him home after the incident.
The volunteers were there to provide him with the basic necessities they had purchased for the month and to pay the house rent for September.
Ramesh is very nervous as his surgery is less than a month away. He is worried that during post-surgery rehabilitation, he will be unable to work, and cannot provide for his family or to pay the rent. To ease his burden, Great Heart will continue to include his family in their monthly support program, which will help to subsidise his daily essentials and rent.
Thanks to our volunteer Iris who has made time each month to visit and assist Ramesh’s family. Our hope for him is that after a successful surgery and recovery, things will work out for Ramesh.
Update August 2015:
Aug follow-up visit to Ramesh. The recent addition of a new baby boy to his family meant extra expenses. As such, the daily essentials that our volunteers delivered to Ramesh’s home included diapers and milk powder among other items. At the same time, we also made a partial rent payment of RM600 on his behalf.
Despite their dire living conditions, Ramesh and his family has never given up on their life. Despite the pain in his leg, Ramesh goes out every single day to collect recycled items to make a living. With all this adversity, we admire their positive and never-up attitude which is reflected in his children’s excellent academic performance.
July 2015:
Recently, Great Heart Angels accompanied Ramesh to University Hospital for an assessment appointment. As his case is non-urgent and does not require emergency treatment, he will have to wait his turn in the queue for treatment. His surgery is scheduled for November 5, 2015.
Kind hearted volunteers also delivered second-hand furniture to his house. His monthly expenses has increased as his wife has just given birth, but his income from selling scrap metal has been badly affected after a fall in iron prices.
Until he has recovered from his knee surgery, Great Heart will provide monthly support for daily essentials and pay his house rent. Our heartfelt thank you to everyone who has come forward to help.
INITIAL SITUATION
Ramesh was injured in a car accident in 2007. After surgery, his condition did not improve as the bones on his right leg began to bend. He has undergone another surgery and exhausted most of the RM20K injury claim. He has to support his wife and their family of five children. He goes around in a 3-wheel motorcycle, collecting recyclable items and scrap metal and selling them to earn a living. It’s not an easy way of life but this is their only source of income. As he has difficulty moving, his leg is swollen after a hard day’s work. Their house is very old and dilapidated, there’s not even a bed in the house, and the family sleeps on the floor at night.
The doctor informed that Ramesh needed another surgery. With supporting documents from the hospital certifying his condition, Great Heart Charity Association will initiate efforts to raise funds for the surgery estimated around RM8000. We would also like to help to pay for the road tax (RM1400) and insurance (RM1100) of his lorry. Thus, he could carry more things to sell and earn more. The family is also badly in need of daily necessities and basic furniture for their bare house.
Great Heart Charity Association has successfully raised RM 12,000 for Ramesh’s surgery fees and to support his monthly household expenses by Jun 2015. Thanks to all our donors, supporters & sponsors.
